Concept of time

There are a couple of phrases Mackenzie says that are funny and/or confusing.

"yesterday" - When Mackenzie uses the word yesterday she could be talking about something that happened seconds, minutes, hours or weeks ago. If it's in the past - it's "yesterday".

"That's my first time"- Brandon and I think we finally figured this one out. It actually means she's done that activity before or she's been there before. So actually she should say, "it's NOT my first time." She says that phrase every time we go to the mail boxes and she sees the playground next door. The play ground she's played on several times before! Until recently, we didn't understand her, but now I just try to correct her and help her understand what a "first time" is.

In regards to the "yesterday" phrase, I had decided that I wanted to work with her on "yesterday, today and tomorrow" along with the days of the week. I had also looked online for different songs regarding the days of the week so that I could teach her. Then a couple of weeks ago, we were all at the grocery store on Saturday night (what an exciting date!) and we realized she was singing the days of the week! She has already taught Brandon and I the song and gets really upset if we say Monday first instead of Sunday. So, now instead of having to teach her, we just sing it a lot and I just have to reinforce it.

So, the question is, what other concepts does Mackenzie know that I don't realize and I should be reinforcing at home?! ;)

It's about time!

I finally got a library card! I haven't had a local library card since high school! It's not that I haven't been to the library since then, it's just that during college I used my ID and the campus libraries. I have been to the local library by our old house once since Grad school, but never took the time to get a card or check out any books.

So finally, on Saturday morning after some play time at a couple of parks, Mackenzie and I went to the local library about 5 minutes from our house and I signed up for a library card. Yay!

Mackenzie really liked the Library, of course and enjoyed sitting in the kids area and reading the books they had out on a smaller shelf. The only thing I'm not fond of is the card catalog is on the other side of the library from the kids area, so I had to take her with me to the computer and she didn't have enough patience for me to look up books for her. In the end, I just picked some random books in the children's section and found one book on an end aisle for me to check out. Total, I checked out 8 books for her and 1 book for me. She was very excited and we had to read a couple of them before her nap that afternoon. I guess you could say I was excited too, since I started reading my book at 3:30 that afternoon and finished by Sunday afternoon. It was a quick read and only took about 4 or 5 hours total reading time, but it was nice to find a book that I could get back into reading with. I'm also excited because I can download books onto my nook and read them from there. I'm on a waiting list for a book right now and can't wait to try borrowing books that way.

I think we'll go back this weekend and exchange our books, but this time, I've already looked up some authors names, so that I know exactly where to go to find the books.

Long before I became pregnant with Mackenzie, I decided I wanted the nursery to have an elephant theme in honor of Texas A&M. In the end it really became a collection rather than a theme that way she can have whatever kind of bedding and still keep all of the elephant figurines and stuffed animals out. I love looking at all of her elephants and have posted a few times about them. Apparently, I never really thought about the next child and what they would collect. I thought maybe they might stick to the same elephant theme, but then do you buy the same elephant thing with gifts or do you buy them each different ones and then what if they like the other one better?

So I'm on the hunt and I think I have it narrowed down - the only problem is that none of them relate to anything like the elephants do, but I guess that doesn't really matter. Anyways, I'm thinking giraffes, monkeys or owls. What do you think?

The giraffes are cute and they make cute little rocking horses like Mackenzie's elephant rocker. And I think you can almost always find giraffe figurines, especially when looking at jungle themes.

The monkeys I'm not so sure about. When I google monkey figurines it pops up with all of the hear no evil, see no evil stuff and I don't really want to go that route.

I'm kind of leaning toward owls right now because they are just so popular and you can find them every where. This website has some pretty cute stuff and it's the first one I looked at. I know there are a million more like this. The question is will they be around later? I think so. The other reason I like the owls is that I have a music box (from one of my own collections) that has 3 owls sitting in a tree. I think it would be neat to pass that down to Meredith. Especially since Mackenzie has an elephant that was my great-grandmothers from the 60s or 70s.

Anyways, just another item on my list to think about! Help me - what animal do you like?

Mass birthday invite

So, Mackenzie received her first birthday invite from a friend at school. I'm calling it a mass invite, because I don't know who the child is and I've never met their parents, so I'm pretty sure the parent got a list of the kids in the class and gave everyone invites. It's in a couple of weeks at The Little Gym. I guess they'll be doing little gymnastic activities, so I'm looking forward to seeing how Mackenzie does with all of that. So, the next step...RSVP and buy a gift. How do you buy a gift for a child you know nothing about? Do you just buy something for ages "3 and up" and attach the receipt?

Because of the invite, I've now been thinking about Mackenzie's birthday even though I know it's 4 months away. Did you not read my previous post? This is what I do! ;) Anyways, since I've been pregnant I always thought I'd have Mackenzie's party before Meredith arrives, but now I'm rethinking it. Mackenzie's birthday is 3 weeks after my due date. If I have the party in August, I run the risk of Meredith coming early and causing issues with the party date. If I wait until October, I might have a better chance of having someone watch Meredith while we have her party at our house or somewhere else. I think I've decided to do October and that way I have a little leeway with the date just in case Meredith shows up 2 weeks late!

Related to Mackenzie's party, I'm trying to decide where we should have it. Again, I know it's super early to be thinking about this, but oh well, I already am. Her first birthday was in the church gym and her second birthday was at our house. We could try to do it somewhere else, but then more money and renting of things becomes a bigger issue. I think it will be at our house, but I guess I need to wait until Meredith arrives to determine if that's still a possibility. Now for the theme... ;)

Where have you had your kids birthday parties? Do you invite all of your child's classmates or just the ones you know?

Brain Overload

My brain is constantly working in the background reminding me of all the things and I need and wand to do. This relates to traveling, shopping, Mackenzie, Meredith, the house...you name it, I'm thinking about it! The other day I finally started putting it all down on paper because I was constantly forgetting what I had thought of the week before. Oh my goodness! My list is l-o-n-g! Some items included are:

-buy letters to hang Meredith's name in the nursery
-make/freeze meals to eat after Meredith is born
-look up special jewelry box for my pearls because Brandon's classmate was shocked that I kept my pearls with all my other jewelry
-buy patio furniture
-buy new tennis shoes for Mackenzie
-decorate above the kitchen cabinets
-look up new recipes on-line

Everything is so random and most are not related to each other. But of course they almost all require spending money, so it's not like my typical to-do list that I can easily cross off.

At some point you would think my brain would stop thinking of things to do, but nope - I add at least one item everyday! Right now I've labeled my list as my "Everything to do/wishlist". I think I should rename it more appropriately as my 5 or 10 year goal list! Maybe then I won't be disappointed when I can't cross things off. In reality, just writing about it has helped me to decide to sort through the list and divide the items into specific time frame goals. I think this would be the best since I'm pretty sure Mackenzie needs the new shoes before I need to decorate my kitchen cabinets or buy patio furniture! ;)

Does this happen to anyone else? Do you have a "wishlist" of all things wanted/needed?

Brandon and I finally chose a middle name for baby Meredith! I know all of you have been dying to know and have been waiting with each and every post! ;)

So without further adieu, the name of our second child will be:

Meredith Danielle

We decided that Lucy didn't really flow with Meredith and I still wasn't too keen on her having the same initials as Mackenzie.

On another note, I had a dream the other night that she ended up surprising us by being a boy when she was born. So here's hoping we really do get to use this name! Otherwise we are back to having only a boy first name and no middle name! ;)

How to feed catfish

First you go to Granny and Papa's house who have catfish. You sit a while and chat while holding hands before saying, "I wanna feed um."
Next you demonstrate what catfish "say". BTW, it's not "meow".
Then, you reach deep into the feed bucket to get the food. (thankful you still wear a diaper, since your shorts are kind of sagging) ;)
Next, you throw it as far out into the water as possible
Of course you have to wipe your hands off on your white shirt.
And then stand and watch.
And that's how you feed catfish! Now "Go feed um!"

This last photo doesn't involve feeding catfish, but I thought it was cute that Mackenzie kept wanting to hold Granny's hand when ever she sat down.

Something I've never done until now

The title is much more intriguing than what I did...but that may be a true statement about almost everything.

I turned someone in yesterday. Well, I turned in a description of a car to building management/security at my office. Our office parking garage has up and down ramps that are not located at the very end of the garage, so often cars almost hit people crossing to their cars because they are driving too fast when they round the corner. Yesterday, I stepped out of the stair well and listened and looked for any cars coming down the ramp beside me. No cars. I took 2 steps into the crosswalk and then my toes were almost run over by a woman in a tan car. I immediately stopped and she kept on going with out any kind of wave or sorry...nothing! I crossed the rest of the way to my car and as I drove down to the ground level I noticed the security guard standing near the exit checking/recording cars' speed and license plates if needed. (clearly speeding is a common problem in our garage) I rolled down my window and asked the guard if she happened to get the license of the tan car that exited a couple of minutes ago. Not to my surprise, she said yes and that she had clocked her going 12 mph (limit is 5 mph) and wrote down her license. I asked her if she could also note that she almost ran me over a couple of floors up and she said yes. So...I tattled. At 31 years old, I am a tattle tale. But in my defense, I didn't want to get hit by a car! ;)

Easter 2011

2 weeks later I'm finally getting around to blogging about Easter! Better late than never! On Saturday we went to my parents' house for a craw fish boil to celebrate my brother's birthday, my parents' anniversary, Brandon's graduation...anything that needed celebrating. Mackenzie watched the craw fish from afar.

It's a good thing we don't have a pool like that or I might would never get her to go in it again!

It was super hot that day, so we had to have pig tails to keep some of our hair up. If only she'd let me do it more often.

Later in the afternoon, Mackenzie died her first eggs. She seemed to really like it, but wanted to touch them while they were still wet. She probably would have died 2 or 3 dozen eggs if I had let her.
To top of the evening we had a really really really good Italian creme cake. I have several pictures of my cousins "helping" me blow out candles through the years. It's cute to see Mackenzie doing the same thing with my brother. Although, according to Ryan, Mackenzie didn't do her job because the two of them didn't blow out all of the candles and left one still burning!

We stayed the night and spent most of Easter Sunday with my family. Mackenzie liked her basket and had to read each book (she received 4 target dollar spot books) individually before pulling out the next item in her basket.

Favorites - bunny ears and sun glasses. These will come back later in the day! Then we hunted eggs! Every time she found an egg she would say, "oh that's good."
This is her before church in her beautiful Easter dress from my mom.
After church we had our Easter dinner and Mackenzie got to visit with Granny...
..and put every thing from her Easter basket on! This includes bunny ears, sunglasses, bracelets (as anklets), flip flops and she's holding her other bracelets.

Bathing Suit

A week ago, I went to Motherhood Maternity with the sole purpose of buying a maternity bathing suit! Yikes!

I thought it would be a horrible experience, but surprisingly it wasn't that bad! I tried on 4 suits and settled on the first one I tried on. I'd show it to you, but since I bought it at the outlet mall, it appears to be from last season and they don't have it online. Anyways, it's really cute and doesn't look too bad on me...if you don't look at my legs!

I also bought a couple of tank tops that along with my 2 from my last pregnancy are my go-to weekend top. So comfortable! I've realized that when I'm pregnant, I use that time to wear tank tops that I wouldn't normally where because I figure everybody assumes my fatty upper arms are because I'm pregnant. I'm already planning to work on the upper arm thing after I have this child because I really like wearing the tank tops/sleeveless shirts. And lets face it...in Houston I need to wear the tank tops in order to not overheat! So, if I can wear them when I'm not pregnant and not be self conscious all day, that would be great!

School Pictures

Mackenzie finally smiles for school pictures!

Other than the clip being in the wrong spot, I think the pictures are really cute. The clip was on the side of her hair when I dropped her off, so obviously it fell out and someone who doesn't ever fix little girls' hair put it back in. Such an odd place, but oh well. I'm sure there will be many more school photos to come that I won't just absolutely love, but will still be cute.

These photos give me hope that I can now take Mackenzie to a photographer and have professional photos taken and she wouldn't cry the entire time! Now, when I add Meredith to the mix, who knows what will happen.
