Copy cat

So, here I go again, copying Holly...welcome to my 2009 Blog recap. The idea is to copy the first line of the first post from month in 2009. Let's see what happened this past year! :)

January
I hope everyone had as good a Christmas as we did.

I think that it's funny that it took me an entire week before I posted about Christmas. Maybe it's not too funny since I still haven't posted about Christmas this year either! My excuse this year is that I left my camera at my grandparents house on Christmas day and won't get it back for another week.

February
This past weekend, I decided to see if Mackenzie would fit/enjoy her "big girl" stroller.

This year was full of firsts with Mackenzie including the stroller ride. If you look back at the blog, you will notice we have a Maclaren stroller which was recalled a couple of months ago. Don't fret - they sent us covers for the hinges. There will be no loss of fingertips with our stroller! :)

March
For my birthday, Brandon bought me a digital SLR camera.

Still one of the best presents ever! I love that camera and have missed it this past week.

April
This past Sunday, Brandon, Mackenzie and I went to my hometown church to visit my family and celebrate Easter early.

This was a good weekend, but after reading this I've realized we haven't been back to visit on a Sunday morning since then! Maybe we can visit a couple of times in 2010.

May
A miniature pool, swim diapers and sunblock...a small swimsuit, large swimsuit, sunglasses and hat...Looks promising...we shall see.

Yeah, we went swimming ONCE this past summer. We were really prepared, had all the stuff, but it's a LOT of work to take a child swimming! Maybe next summer!

June
This picture looks really familiar...oh that's right this is my same team from 2 years ago at our company Bowling Tournament.

I go bowling once a year - for our company tournament. We have 3 events every year - bowling, golf and Christmas party. The bowling tourney is the cheapest event that everyone enjoys the most! I'm sure there will be another blog about it in 2010.

July
So after I read Holly's blog, I realized I suffer from the same Bloggy Funk Denial!

I seemed to have several of these this years. I think my biggest issue is trying to balance my blog and not have it become all about Mackenzie. I know some of you really like my pictures of Mackenzie, but I also want to appeal to those that might be interested in me too and not just my daughter. The truth is that a lot of times I don't think I have anything interesting to say, but who knows maybe what I find dull is interesting to someone. Then again, maybe what I find dull is dull and you all are just waiting on photos of Mackenzie!

August
When I drop off or pick up Mackenzie from school, her teachers tell me how good and how much she eats at school.

This hasn't really been the case in the last couple of weeks. I think a lot of has to do with her being sick, but some of it could be her just becoming a slightly picky eater. Lately we havent' been able to get her to eat much more than fruit, crackers or nutrigrain bars. Tonight she actually ate some of my tortellini and Brandon's ham sandwich while she was sitting in our laps. Apparently when she is given this same food in her high chair it doesn't taste the same! (BTW, you can see from our dinner description that Brandon and I are taking it easy and doing nothing this new years eve.)

September
I just looked back at previous posts and the last 3 posts with pictures of Mackenzie are very similar.

I don't really have much to say about this post other than - "yep".

October
So for the last 3 days I've traveled back and forth to Dallas.

I'm glad that's over! I did however get 3 free airplane tickets out of all the trips I took this past year, so on the agenda for 2010 is a family vacation! Woohoo!

November
Last year at Halloween, Mackenzie was 6 weeks old and the glow worm costume did NOT go over well with her.

Halloween was definitely better this year, but I'm really looking forward to next year when she can really walk around and have fun going door to door.

December
Lately our "office" in our house has no resemblance of it's so called name.

What's really funny about this post, is while we did box up a lot of stuff, now after Christmas the room is a total mess again! My goal is to clean it up again before I go back to work on Monday, but seeing as how I'm on "vacation", I'm not sure it's going to happen.

I really liked this blog recap. I had fun reading my old blogs and remembering this past year. I hope all of you had a wonderful 2009 and here's to an even better 2010! Happy New Year!

Let the Festivities Begin!

This past weekend we had our first set of Christmas events. Friday night my parents watched Mackenzie while Brandon and I went to his company party. My parents brought Mackenzie her Christmas presents early which helped when I had to sneak out of the house. I'll blog more about those gifts later. Saturday morning Mackenzie and I drove down to Alvin to have our "girls Christmas" with my mom, grandmother, aunt and cousin. The 6 of us had so much fun eating, visiting and exchanging gifts.

That evening we had Christmas with my family at my parent's house. We thought we'd make it an easy dinner by just having appetizers, but once we put it all together we ended up with quite the smorgasbord! Pork or Brisket sliders, 7 layer dip, pigs ina blanket, bbq smokes, crab cake things, spinach artichoke dip, taquitos, queso fruit & veggie trays and let's not forget dessert - miniature cheesecakes! My sister makes the best cheeseckaes ever and these little ones seem even better! I know Mackenzie agrees because she practically inhaled her cheesecake.

Mackenzie enjoyed playing with the big kids:

The gift exchange was great and my parents family gift to us and my siblings was a box of BBQ from Coopers in Lano, Texas. While all of the food fit in our freezer when we got home, Brandon and I decided we needed a larger fridge. The next day we bought this:

I absolutely love this fridge! We still have our old one in the garage for extra storage which I know will defintely come in handy this weekend when Brandon's family is in town!

I'm running out of time to post about Mackezie's gifts, so I'll blog about it later. Hopefully it will be before Christmas! We'll see.

Long time, No blog

Wow! Two weeks is a long time not to blog. This morning I was asked to add a new blog post, so I decided to see what photos I had uploaded here at work and once again post about Mackenzie through pictures.

These first 2 are from the day before Thanksgiving when she stayed home with Brandon while I worked. There are 2 things about these photos that I want to point out. First, notice how she's in forward movement in the picture. You now have to be walking/running backward to get a picture of her. Second, have you noticed the pink sparkle dress shoes with the fleece pajamas? Apparently she really wanted to wear them and here daddy just can't say no. :)

This oven mitt that she's wearing in the first 3 photos is her new toy. I think the reason we took these photos is because this is one of the few times she has actually put the oven mitt on her hand. She likes to play with the oven mitt, but if I put it on my hand she freaks out. I guess when an oven mitt comes to life, it's a little scary for children! :)

This is sort of a follow up to the post about the magnets being thrown on the floor. During the Thanksgiving holiday when we were at home with Mackenzie for 5 days, I can't count the number of times we picked up all 36 magnets off the kitchen floor. At one point I caught her at least putting them in the case of water instead of scattered on the floor. Since that weekend, we have moved all of the letter and animal magnets to the top of the door where she can't reach them. Brandon gave her 1 letter and 2 animal pieces (for her 2 different magnet sets) and she still throws those 3 on the floor daily. Who knows when she'll get to know the rest of the alphabet! :) (BTW, the letters weren't moved up just because we didn't like picking them up. She actually stepped on one and fell down on the tile floor and they hurt my feet when I step on them as well.)

And finally, Mackenzie's new favorite napping place. We keep this pillow in the living room and she loves it. The last couple of weekends she has fallen asleep on the pillow for her morning and afternoon naps. Other than the fact that I can't be too loud around the house since she's in the living room, it's not too bad and she sleeps for at least an hour each time.

Well, I'm hoping to take/upload pictures of our Christmas tree, school pictures and other stuff tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully it won't be another 2 weeks before I post again - maybe more like 2 days!

As Seen on TV

Lately our "office" in our house has no resemblance of it's so called name. Maybe it's the dusty elliptical machine in the middle of the room, the storage bins full of baby clothes, toys, paraphernalia, the Christmas gifts stacked in the corner, the piles of left over first birthday decoration.. you name it. Since we are hosting Christmas this year, we thought it best to do some serious cleaning out of the room. First task - move the elliptical machine to the garage. Check. Second - store Mackenzie's clothes, toys, paraphernalia somewhere else. To check off this task we did something I don't think we ever done - we bought an "As Seen on TV" product. Have you seen the commercial for these:

I read some reviews online and found that the basic bags weren't that great, but the underbed tote bag was much better. So we bought 3 of these:

Here are the "before" pictures of 2 of the bags:

Here is the "after" picture with all 3 bags!

Now they are all sotred under our bed and the tub is storing bottles, sterilizer, bathtub...a lot of bulky stuff that space saver bags can't help. We also moved some of the bigger, bulkier items to the garage and I was able to throw away or sort the birthday stuff I mentioned. While we still have a few minor things to clean out and sort, our "office" is finally starting to live up to it's name!

Matching

Ever since I was little, I've had issues with matching/coordinating clothing. I've always preferred or wanted to buy the outfit on the mannequin rather than mixing and matching. It's just easier that way - at least for me it is. So of course I do the same thing with Mackenzie's clothes. Gymboree is awesome for me because they have entire lines of clothing that all coordinate. After I got home with Mackenzie today, I looked at her outfit and wondered if it really matched. I got the pair of pants and shirt on a table that said, "mix and match". So, does this really match?

Random Things

So, I realize I haven't posted many updates on Mackenzie lately other than Halloween, so here's the last month in review!

Sweet smile!
We went to the park several weeks ago and she really liked it. She wasn't sure at first:
But after a while she came around. She even liked the slide.

This is what happens when I try to take a picture of the two of us. Can you tell she's trying to get free of my arms? :)
Crazy hair after a bath!
This next set of my pictures is one of my favorites! For the last 13 months I have not seen the portion of kitchen counter adjacent to my sink.
We have officially weened Mackenzie off the bottle! She's been drinking from a sippy cup for 4 or 5 months, but when it came to milk, she still wanted a bottle. Then we got her to drink milk from a sippy cup every time except for her morning bottle. Finally 2 weeks ago she drank her morning milk from a sippy cup. Last Saturday night I washed bottles for the last time! Woo hoo! And now I have my kitchen counter back!

Ever since my aunt Rhonda bought Mackenzie her pink bunny/blanket/lovee, she has loved it. She sleeps with it at night and I almost always take it with us when we go somewhere just in case. Last Saturday, Mackenzie and I ran errands all morning and on the way home she fell asleep. When we got home I couldn't resist taking a picture. She has fallen asleep like this, with her bunny in her mouth many, many times!

This week, Mackenzie decided she didn't want the magnets to stay on the refrigerator. I didn't even realize what she was doing until she was halfway through. One by one, she took every letter and farm animal off the fridge and threw it on the floor.
yes, that's 26 letters and 10 animal magnets on the floor!

And my final random review of Mackenzie is her favorite phrase right now - "uh oh". I have no pictures/videos but she is so cute when she says it. Today one of her toys rolled under the tv stand and she looked up at us and said "uh oh". Also this morning in the bathtub she was playing with the faucet when I heard her say "uh oh" twice. This was then followed by her peeing in the tub! That officially ended the bath! :) I guess this could be a good sign that maybe she'll be easy to potty train right? :)

Games

Every weekday, when my phone clock reads 12:00, I immediately open Firefox and go straight to Facebook. This might seem normal to some of you,but when I go to Facebook, I'm going mainly to play games! At first I played Pet Society and a wold geography game, but then I found Restaurant City. Recently (in the last 2 weeks) I've become addicted to...wait for it...My zoo and School of Wizardry (Harry Potter game). Yes, I realize this makes me a complete dork, but I can't seem to help myself! They are so addicting because its not just a simple card/dice game that ends every few minutes. These are all games that require days, months of playing (if it actually ever ends) because you are constantly saving up money, energy, supplies to complete the next challenge and move to the next level. For the last 2 mornings I've even found myself playing games at 5:30 in the morning after I've had my shower! What is wrong with me?! I told Brandon this morning that he needs to keep me off the computer tonight so that I can actually iron, clean and in general keep the house tidy. In all honesty my obsessions come and go. For this month I'll be constantly playing games at lunch and in the evenings. Next month will probably be Christmas cards and after that ...reading or who know what. I know most of you don't play the same facebook games as me otherwise I'd see your name on my friends list for that game, but do you have other meaningless obsessions that take over your free time?

Better than last year!

Last year at Halloween, Mackenzie was 6 weeks old and her glow worm costume did NOT go over well with her. I don't think I have a single picture with out her crying while wearing the costume. This year went much better, but it did take some planning ahead. Last sunday/monday she wouldn't touch the costume and didn't want it near her. We left it on the couch/floor with all her toys all week and by mid week she would at least touch it. Firday was her party at school and she could have worn her costume but I was concerned she might not wear it on Saturday if she hated it on Friday. She wore this instead:

On Saturday we went to my parents' house and went trick or treating (really just one house) in their neighborhood. Mackenzie actually stayed in her costume for quite a while and seemed to enjoy it. I think she really just enjoyed walking around on my parents' tile floor with or with out a costume.

She of course had some more M&M's after trick or treating and then my dad pulled out the big treat for Mackenzie - Dreyers DIBS ice cream treat. If you haven't had any, they are chocolate covered ice cream bites and they are DELICIOUS! Mackenzie feels the same way and would stare and practically yell at me if I didn't give her her half of the bite quick enough! Once again, there isn't anything she'll turn down - especially chocolate/sweets! Hope everyone had a great Halloween. I'm still enjoying the left over candy here in teh office. I might be enjoying it a little too much! :)

Christmas Card Dilema

Brandon/Charlton's Christmas card history:

Year 1 Christmas - I bought a box of Christmas cards and mailed them out
Year 2 Christmas - I made half of the cards and bought half of the cards
Years 3 through 7 - I made all of my Christmas cards (with my mom's help of course)
Year 8 - I went cheap and easy and sent the picture post card of Mackenzie

Now we've reached year 9 and I don't know what to do - store bought? hand made? picture post card? letter? I feel like I can eliminate the letter because I don't think we have done anything real interesting all year to warrant an 8 1/2 x 11 page letter. The picture post card is nice, but I can't write anything on them and I like to write a small note in my christmas cards. I like hand made cards, but it can be very time consuming. I like store bought cards, but I can't always find cards that I just absolutely love. Deep down I know what I'm going to do...but talking about it makes it a little bit of an easier decision. Most likely I'll do a hand made card (simple I hope) and insert a picture of Mackenzie and/or us. With that said, I guess I have 1 dilema down, now onto the next...designing my card. It looks like I need to go to my mom's house for ideas once again! :)

What is everyone else doing for Christmas cards? Have you even thought about it or is it way too early and I'm just crazy! :)

I love chocolate!

I do love chocolate, but this post is about Mackenzie loving chocolate. Brandon decided to share some of his M&M's with Mackenzie today and we are pretty sure she likes them, but then again who doesn't?

Everyone needs a little Sparkle!

Who needs ruby red slippers when you have these?

These were actually Brandon's choice and needless to say Mackenzie loves them!

Opening Night

Tonight was opening night for the building I've been working on for the last 4 years! It's awesome to see the building complete...well, mostly complete. :) I hope all went well and that the opera went off with out a hitch. If you are ever in Dallas, go see an opera or broadway show! Also, there is an exhibit at the Nasher that I have not seen, but am told has my name on display. To all of my Dallas relatives - go to the museum and take a picture if you can! It may be the only time my name is ever in a museum exhibit! :)
I'm not going to go into any detail about the project because I don't blog about work specifics, but if you are interested here are some articles from this last week:

NY Times

Dallas News

Designboom

E-Architect

PS - My office was involved in both buildings discussed in the articles but I specifically worked on the opera house - the big red one!

Did you know???

Did you know Christmas is only a little over 10 weeks away?!!! I can't believe it's already here! Since I'm already a crazy list person, Christmas makes things so much more crazy. I already have my list of people to buy for (16 + Brandon and Mackenzie); stockings to fill (4 + Brandon and Mackenzie); goodie baskets for friends; gifts for teachers; christmas card list (60+); and I'm sure I'm forgetting something...oh yeah - decorations, food, schedule of events (we are hosting this year, so christmas last for several days). The sad thing, is that while I have all of these lists, I have NOT bought a single gift!!!! I've thought about gifts and have several ideas for different people but have not committed. I should probably start buying things soon, especially if I'll be doing some internet shopping.

As I mentioned earlier, we are hosting the Meyers Christmas at our house this year. Brandon and I have decided to forgo the traditional christmas tree for 2 reasons: 1) absolutely no room for a tree and 7 adults, 1 child, and presents; 2) We don't feel like saying "no, Mackenzie - don't touch the tree" over and over again. So, with that said, we are looking for alternatives to the big christmas tree. We currently have our coffee table in front of the fire place blocking the opening and I'm thinking we'll have a small tree sitting on the table. I've looked online and these are different trees I think are kind of cute.

What do you think? I think Brandon is thinking we'll have more of a traditional tree, just smaller, but I'm wanting to go a little quirky if we aren't going to put our big tree up. I have a feeling though, that we are going to need to go shopping in an actual store to see the tree before we buy it. I'll be sure to post the final outcome in early december once we've decorated!

pony tail and eating

Apparently the teachers at Mackenzie's school think she has enough hair for a pony tail. It's basically enough to fit in the band. The first picture's hard to see, but the majority of the pony tail is covered by the giant brown band and the orange band is at the very tip of the pony tail. I have no clue how they got her to sit long enough to wrap the band around that many times! :)
Random pictures:
Mackenzie LOVES lasagna!

She loves the medicine dropper as long as it doesn't have medicine! Imagine that!

1st Birthday Party

Now that Mackenzie is 12 1/2 months, I guess I should blog about her party! :) We had her party at the church gym because our house is too small to hold everyone. We got their early and thanks to Aubrey & Dustin the decorating was finished just as everyone was arriving! Everything went well and she did great - especially with the singing. I was sure she was going to start crying when everyone started singing, but she actually got a little shy and put her head down. She didn't actually want to touch or eat the cake so Brandon ended up feeding her watermelon and she was content with that. Opening presents went well and she has really enjoyed all of her new toys and books. I wasn't thinking clearly when I planned the party and so the party happened basically in the middle of her nap time. Mackenzie was asleep before we got half way home and the church is only about 5-7 minutes away! Overall she had a great birthday and birthday party, but I'm glad it's behind us! Now we can concentrate on this next year - learning to talk, walk, run and so much more! I'm really looking forward to all our new firsts this coming year! Stay tuned!

Traveling - What I've learned

So for the last 3 days I've traveled back and forth to Dallas. After 6 flights and 6 cab rides in 3 days, this is what I've learned (in no particular order):

  1. People really open up on air planes and tell a random stranger everything about their lives! I found I talk to people a little and I might say I'm an architect or that I have a daughter, but some people tell everything - just got divorced, son is playing sports, i bought my granddaughter a pony purse...whatever they can think of. It's like they have this 50 minute bonding time and tell all knowing they will never see each other again. I just don't get it.
  2. I don't like sitting in seats near the wings. I feel like the plane flexes a little more there, but it could just be me. However, no matter how much I try, I always seem to sit on those rows. I think I'm far enough back, but I'm not and apparently I don't know how to look out the window until I'm already seated!
  3. Airport food is expensive!
  4. A large bottle of water costs $2.95. Every morning after I went through security I went straight to the mini market thing and bought a large bottle of water for the day. If I'm allowed to take it on the plane, why can't I bring my own water? Security reasons I'm sure, but it's annoying. Then at the end of the day when I got to the airport in Dallas, I had to throw that bottle away and buy another water/drink once I was past security! Again - annoying.
  5. Cab fairs apparently differ even though every morning and every afternoon I went to the same place and it's supposed to be a flat $20 fare. Explain please.
  6. I think Southwest is known for their humor, but not every phrase has to make you laugh and sometimes I think they try too hard. It kind of reminds me of that song *Almond Joy* song, "sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't". Sometimes, I don't need the humor - just tell me the safety instructions, tell me when we landed (as if I didn't notice) and lets get on with the day.
  7. Speaking of nuts, southwest serves pretzels and honey roasted peanuts. Neither of which I like. I'd rather have plain peanuts or chocolate covered peanuts. Ooh, why not give out peanut M&M's instead?
  8. And last but not least, I've learned that 6:15am is way too early for the flight attendant to have the intercom turned up as loud as possible. While 6:15 is early, it's quite an enjoyable flight, because hardly anyone is on it and it's dark and cozy. I still didn't sleep because I can't sleep on planes and I was already up, but it was cozy none the less.
Only one day left of my week and I actually get to stay in Houston! Woo hoo! I also realize that some of you are still waiting on a post about Mackenzie's party and I promise I will get to that this weekend. I've already gathered my pictures I just have to sit here and post them. Apparently I wanted to talk about airplanes more than Mackenzie and the party - that's a first! ;)

One year ago today Brandon and I packed our suitcase and headed off to the hospital. Before we left we took on last belly shot:
At about 12:30, I walked into the operating room and at 1:24pm, Mackenzie Lauren Meyers was born! These were her stats:
From this:

To this:
This is her first present from us. She obviously didn't quite understand the concept of opening a present, but she did rip a couple of pieces.
The puzzle was a big hit and she'll get another one tonight! :)

She actually got her first birthday gift yesterday evening from her Uncle Casey and Aunt Virginie. It is a 3 little pigs playset. She absolutely loved them and actually fell asleep in my arms holding the wolf and one of the pigs.
She even thought they were still fun this morning! Thanks Casey and Virginie!

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY MACKENZIE!
